The Challenge
Abu Dhabi summers can exceed 45°C with extreme humidity. Training in these conditions requires adaptation, not avoidance.
Hydration Strategy
- Start hydrating 2 hours before training
- Aim for 500ml per 30 minutes of exercise
- Add electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) to your water
- Monitor urine color — pale yellow is the target
Training Timing
- Best windows: Early morning (5–7 AM) or evening (7–9 PM)
- Avoid outdoor training between 11 AM – 4 PM
- Air-conditioned indoor facilities are your best friend
Nutrition Adjustments
- Increase sodium intake (you lose significant salt through sweat)
- Cold fruits and smoothies for hydration and nutrients
- Lighter meals before training to avoid GI distress
- Watermelon, cucumber, and citrus fruits for natural hydration
Gear and Clothing
- Moisture-wicking fabrics only
- Light colors to reflect heat
- Proper ventilation in training shoes
- Sun protection (SPF 50+) for outdoor sessions
Signs to Stop
Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion:
- Dizziness or confusion
- Nausea or vomiting
- Excessive sweating or sudden stop of sweating
- Rapid heartbeat
If you experience these, stop immediately, cool down, and hydrate.
The Bottom Line
Heat is a challenge, not an excuse. With proper preparation, you can maintain peak performance year-round in Abu Dhabi.
